בשנת 1984 הוקלט שיר שנקראה "do they know its christmas?" הזמרים ששרו אותו היו זמרים בריטים ואירים (חלק מband aid). שיר זה היה שיר צדקה, בהשראתו החליטו בארצות הברית לאחד זמרים גדולים ולשיר יחד שיר צדקה. מייקל ג'קסון וליונל רייצי כתבו את השיר we are the world וQuincy Jones הפיק אותו. השתתפו המון זמרים מפורסמים ביניהם ניתן למצוא את: סטיבי וונדר, ברוס ספרינגסטין, פול סיימון, טינה טרנר, סינדי לאופר, מייקל ג'קסון, דיאנה רוס, בוב דילן, ריי צ'ארלס, דריל הול וג'ון אוטס, בילי ג'ואל וקני רוג'רס. השיר הזה הפך במהרה ללהיט, כבש את ראשי המצעדים בכל העולם וגייס למעלה מ130 מיליון דולר למטרות הומנטריות. השיר הזה הוא ביצוע מוזיקלי ייחודי שנולד מתוך ידיעה שלזמרים האלה יש את הכוח להשפיע ברמה עולמית ואכן כך היה. כל הכנסות השיר נתרמו לכל מיני מטרות הומטריות באפריקה. אין ספק שהשיר הזה הוביל לשינויי בחברה ולכן בחרתי להעלות את השיר הזה.
